Biological Characterization of the New Invasive Brine Shrimp Artemia franciscana in Tunisia: Sabkhet Halk El-Menzel

چکیده
Endemic Artemia franciscana populations can be found throughout the American continent and also as an introduced specie in several country all over the world, such as in the Mediterranean region where Artemia franciscana was identified as an invasive specie replacing native Artemia parthenogenetica and Artemia salina. In the present study, the characterization of the new invasive Artemia franciscana reported from Sabkhet Halk El-Menzel (Tunisia) was done based on the cysts biometry, nauplii instar-I length, Adult sexual dimorphism and fatty acid profile. The mean value of the diameter of non-decapsulated and decapsulated cysts, chorion thickness and naupliar length is 235.8, 226.3, 4.75 and 426.8 μm, respectively. Sexual dimorphism for adults specimen showed that maximal distance between compound eyes, diameter for compound eyes, length of first antenna and the abdomen length compared to the total body length ratio, are the most important variables for males and females discrimination with a total contribution of 62.39 %. The analysis of fatty acid methyl esters profile of decapsulated cysts resulted in low levels of linolenic acid (LLA, C18:3n-3) and high levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5n-3) with 3.11 and 11.10 %, respectively. Low quantity of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) was also observed with 0.17 mg.g dry weight. Keywords—Invasive Artemia franciscana, biometry, sexual dimorphism, fatty acid, Tunisia.

متن کاملAcute toxicity of TiO2, CuO and ZnO nanoparticles in brine shrimp, Artemia franciscana
The brine shrimp, Artemia spp., is widely used in ecotoxicological research as a biological index. In the present study, aquatic stability and acute toxic effects of TiO2, CuO and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) on Artemia franciscana were investigated. Acute exposure was conducted in sea water with different concentrations of selected nanoparticles at 24h, 48h, 72h and 96h. The mortality rate of A. fr...

متن کاملMaladaptive Sex Ratio Adjustment in the Invasive Brine Shrimp Artemia franciscana
Sex allocation theory is often hailed as the most successful area of evolutionary theory due to its striking success as a predictor of empirical observations [1]. Most naturally occurring sex ratios can be explained by the principle of equal investment in the sexes [2-4] or by cases of "extraordinary" sex allocation [5]. Deviations from the expected sex ratio are often correlated with weak sele...
متن کاملComparative Phylogenetic Perspectives on the Evolutionary Relationships in the Brine Shrimp Artemia Leach, 1819 (Crustacea: Anostraca) Based on Secondary Structure of ITS1 Gene
This is the first study on phylogenetic relationships in the genus Artemia Leach, 1819 using the pattern and sequence of secondary structures of internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1). Significant intraspecific variation in the secondary structure of ITS1 rRNA was found in Artemia tibetiana. In the phylogenetic tree based on joined primary and secondary structure sequences, Artemia urmiana and pa...
